Castle Square
START PAGE | PRE-WAR MAP | POST-WAR MAP
This view, looking diagonally across Castle Square towards the corner of Caer Street and Wind Street, shows the full sweep of the square. In the background is Swansea Castle and, behind that, the British Telecom building. Prior to the building of Castle Square in the 1990s this site was home to Castle Gardens, and before the Three Nights' Blitz in February 1941, the 'Ben Evans' department store.

Your Memories

Marina Kutschke ( Germany )

My Auntie and Uncle were emplyed by BT for many years and had good Jobs there. My Uncle was an engineer and my Aunite a supervisor, that is how I got a job with BT around 1978. I worked not only in the tower buliding where at that time Directory enquiries and ....oh how was it called? People with problems with their phones could phone for help and advice...the main switchboard was in wind street. I remember we were allowed to make free phone calls anywhere in the world, in one corner of the large office space there was a phone we could use. I called friends in America and my father and his wife on honeymoon in Canada. It was a very special thing to be able to do at that time. I am sure things have changed since the 70`s. At that time we still used phone directories to look up numbers, although if I remember correctly there was some kind of electronic board telling us how many calls were waiting in the queue.
