In House Art

Swansea Museum presents a selling display of art and photography from combined – and artistically diverse - talents of members of the Museum staff, including Paul Giuffrida, Patricia Nicholls and Paul O'Donovan – three artists well known in the region, along with the lens work of Matthew Senior, a photographer of repute. All the work will be available for sale, to be collected at the close of the exhibition.

Workshops with artist Ruth McLees

Ruth McLees makes another appearance with us, running another of the popular Skin Deep family workshops, the theme this time being tattoo inspired armbands and bracelets. All materials will be supplied, and our younger visitors will be able to design and make their own decorative items to take home. All workshops are 'drop in'.

Sunday 27 June

National Archaeology Day

The return of the ever popular National Archaeology Day organised in conjunction with the Glamorgan Gwent Archaeological Trust, the Museum filled with sights, sounds and smells from long ago, as Roman cookery, colourful re-enactment groups, and history societies combine to present our past in an up to date and exciting day out for all.

Tros Gynnal Charity Art Auction

We preview the long established Charity Art Auction organised by the Tros Gynnal Childrens Charity. The exhibition of paintings and three dimensional artworks donated by leading artists throughout Wales will be on view until 5 September, the Auction to be held later in the month.

31 July 2010 - 2 January 2011

The Road Ahead

The 19th century saw the beginning of motoring and our new exhibition tells the story of the miles and the milestones on two and four wheels in this region. From ancient to modern, fossil fuels to green energy, racing to relaxation, travel to trade. Sir Stirling Moss, Ford Motor Company, BP Oil, and many other great names were here – now you can share those times.

Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 August

Summer Craft Fair

An opportunity to see many local crafts-persons presenting their unique wares for sale at Swansea Museum – everything from stained glass, woodworking, paintings, wool-work and jewellery, along with much more.

18 September to 24 December

Worn to be Wild

A vibrant exhibition of contemporary costumes by Kate Plumtree, costume maker and creative textile artist. The costumes are inspired by British wild birds and mammals, and the history of fashion. From a medieval deer to a contemporary hedgehog, they are presented alongside the artist's sketchbooks, fabric samples and photographs.

From 18 September

The Welsh Watercolour Society

The Welsh Watercolour Society display a selection of members artwork in our Long Gallery. We hope that this prestigious exhibition will make an annual appearance at Swansea Museum from mid 2011 onward.

Other Swansea Museum Events

Swansea Museum also has a full yearly programme of lectures, smaller displays and exhibitions, and a diary of special events, including Craft Fairs, and community displays.

Swansea Museum is the oldest in Wales, having opened in 1841, and presents local history and heritage in an entertaining and unique way. Alongside these fascinating glimpses into Swansea memory lane, there are lively and up to date exhibitions and special events.

The Museum has an eye for the past, the present, and the future, and welcomes you with a warmth that only this very special building can…The Mummy of Hor the Priest, the delicate porcelain of Swansea, the amazing things in the Victorian Cabinet of Curiousities, and much, much more await you ! As Dylan Thomas – who often would wander the corridors of Swansea Museum – once said fondly “It is a Museum that should be in a Museum”… And it is all to be enjoyed as free of charge as it was to dear Dylan!
